Resilience Certification

In order to protect guests and airport staff, ensure rapid restoration of airport functionality, and secure functionality to serve as a base for disaster management, the Kansai Airport Group has established the Earthquake and Tsunami Business Continuity Plan (BCP).

This page features information on evacuating in the event of an earthquake with a seismic intensity of 6-lower or greater on the Japanese seismic intensity scale, or a major tsunami warning, at Kansai International Airport (KIX).

1. Basic Principles

  • In the event of an earthquake with a seismic intensity of 6-lower or greater at Kansai International Airport, guests will be guided to an outdoor evacuation site. The building will be checked to confirm safety, and guests will be guided back inside to a space deemed safe. (As a general rule, guests will remain inside in the event of an earthquake with a seismic intensity of 5-upper or less.)
  • The airport will immediately show information on monitors and give evacuation instructions, as well as make an emergency announcement (evacuation announcement) over the loudspeakers. In addition, evacuation guidance will be provided primarily by security staff.
  • In the event that a major tsunami warning is issued for Osaka Prefecture, guests will be guided to an evacuation site such as the station concourse or the Second Airport Island.

2. Examples of Information Displayed on Monitors

  • Monitors at the airport will display information like the examples shown below in the event that they receive an earthquake early warning or a major tsunami warning.

3. Emergency Announcements

Announcements like “This is an earthquake early warning. Prepare for strong shaking.” will be made in Japanese, English, Chinese, and Korean, and will repeat.

4. In the Event of an Earthquake Early Warning…

  • Do what you can to ensure your safety, and wait for the shaking to stop.
  • Get away from windows and other glass, and move toward pillars or walls.
  • If you are in an elevator, do not panic. Wait for maintenance staff to come rescue you.
  • Follow the guidance of the security staff, and try to remain calm.

5. Examples of Information Displayed at Airports

  • For evacuations to outdoor evacuation sites, follow the guidance of the security staff and signage such as the examples shown below.
