From the serenely towering active volcano Sakurajima and the famous Ibusuki hot sand bathing to nature, hot springs, history, and gourmet cuisine, Kagoshima is brimming with exciting experiences.
Its convenient location about an hour away from Kansai makes it an extremely popular spot.

DAY 1: The smooth check in really changed our image of LCC trips! We arrived in Kagoshima in about an hour

My wife saw us off as we set out on our first "father-daughter only" trip.
I was under the impression that you have to check in early for an LCC trip, so we got to Kansai International Airport two hours early. First off, we took the free shuttle bus to the Terminal 2 building to take care of boarding procedures. I was worried that the machine automated check in process would be too confusing, but the staff helped and it was over almost before it started.

We sat down and talked, and arrived in Kagoshima before we knew it.

Looking through the window and enjoying the scenery unfolding beneath us, I had fun talking with my daughter. And then we were in Kagoshima before we even knew it. Unfortunately, it was rainy when we arrived at Kagoshima Airport. But we had scheduled a trip to "Io World Kagoshima Aquarium" for our first day, and since that is an inside activity, everything was fine! Watching my daughter staring intently at the fish swimming freely in the tank, talking to them, and generally having a great time, all of my worries about our very first father-daughter trip melted away.

DAY 2: We rode on the "Ibutama" and tried the famous Ibusuki hot sand bath for the first time ever! It was relaxing for both the body and the soul.

We took the popular train "Ibutama" to Ibusuki. On the second day, we took the "Limited Express Ibusuki no Tamatebako" to Ibusuki. This uniquely named limited express train incorporates a special theme based on the Dragon Palace legend of the Satsuma Peninsula. The name comes from the "tamatebako" treasure box given to Urashima Taro in the story. The train is also popular for a special white mist that looks like smoke as it greets passengers when boarding.

On the way we wanted a little something to snack on, so I bought "Ibutama Pudding," a special item sold only on the train.
So we got to keep pretty busy on the train and wound up arriving at Ibusuki Station in about fifty minutes. Before trying out the hot sand bath, which is what we set out for, we went to Nishioyama Station. This is JR's southernmost station. An unmanned station that opens up to an expansive rural scene and a view of the Kaimondake volcano from the front, this station is a very popular sightseeing spot.

Leaving Nishioyama Station behind, next we set out to try the famous Ibusuki "hot sand bath" for our first time! First you change into a yukata robe, then you lie on top of the sand and have sand that has been heated to a comfortable temperature piled atop your body. Covered in pleasantly warm sand, I felt relaxed to the marrow while taking in the wonderful southern ocean breeze. I was delivered into a land of fantasy.

DAY 3: We thoroughly enjoyed Kirishima sightseeing and the fun of Kagoshima with a Sakurajima circuit tour and historical spot tour

I love history, so the third day was a "special treat for Dad." And my little girl loves stamp rallies, so she had fun trying them here

Finally the last day of the trip was upon us. First off, the ultimate Kagoshima sight seeing spot is definitely the Saigo Takamori monument. After nailing down a photo in front of the giant 8 meter statue, it was off to the "Senganen Garden," a place I had really been looking forward to seeing. This was originally created by Shimazu Mitsuhisa, the 19th head of the Shimazu clan. Towards the end of the Edo period, the site featured things like an artillery foundry and glass studio, making this a place that contributed greatly to the modernization of Japan.

Next we headed on to Sakurajima. It took about 15 minutes by boat from the Kagoshima Port Ferry Terminal. Both of us were simply amazed at the dynamic view of Sakurajima seen up close. We also visited the nearby "Akamizu Lookout Square" and "Sakurajima Visitor Center," where visitors can learn about the eruption history of Sakurajima and the surrounding nature.

Next we headed to Kirishima Shrine, which has been garnering attention recently as a "power spot." When lunch time came around our sightseeing taxi driver told us about a place to go for "soba noodles with wild boar meat," so we went to check it out. And of course the recommendation from a local led us to an amazing flavor experience!
After we ate our fill, next we headed to the popular leisure spot "Kirishima Shinwa no Sato Park." Arriving at the top via the sightseeing lift, we were able to see the Kirishima mountains and even all the way to Sakurajima and Kinko Bay.

On a quest for Kagoshima souvenirs, the last place we headed on our trip was the "Kirishima Hot Spring Market." Amongst a lineup of specialty products made from local items like Kirishima tea, what really caught my eye were the steamed sweet potatoes and hot spring steamed eggs cooked with steam from the hot spring. Steaming hot and sweet, we had fun stealing food from each other while gobbling it down. We still had some time before our flight back home, so we visited "Shiobitashi Hot Spring," which is said to have been visited by Sakamoto Ryoma and his wife Oryo, and enjoyed a lot of sightseeing around Kagoshima until evening.
